My First MacLean Read: The Season, as previously mentioned. She’s always high on my to-read list when a new book is released. You want to know how I can prove it, though? I’ve read every single one of her novels. Like one character is obsessed with unpickable locks and that was a thing? I have learned so much about history from her books because each character is so unique. Her latest series, The Bareknuckle Bastards, involves life in Covent Gardens, or what is pretty close to being the slums of London. (Scandal and being outside of society are big things for MacLean.) From a historical standpoint, her work is fantastic. Her characters include: gaming hell owners, bluestockings, accused murderers, women in disguise, smugglers, bordello owners, and men and women ruined by scandal. The characters aren’t typically your “he’s the hottest gentleman in the ballroom, she’s the most promising debutante the ton has seen in years” types. It’s still good, but she’s written way better.īecause, if you haven’t read MacLean’s work before, it’s absolutely stunning. And, in retrospect, the Love By Numbers series isn’t her finest work. The book, Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake, came out in 2010, but I didn’t read it until 2012. I guess that says something about how girls were written before that point?Ī year after The Season came out, MacLean made the move to Romance and initially, I was hesitant. At the time, I remember thinking how cool it was that there were smart historical female characters. It was funny and thrilling, and I loved the bold, intelligent leads. As you can see, her first novel was actually a YA historical story about three unorthodox debutantes who are trying to solve a murder mystery involving a neighbor.
